How Often Should You Clean Your Windows in the Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina–Triangle Area?

If you’ve ever looked out your living room window and thought, “When did those get so dirty?”, you’re not alone. It is one of the most common questions we hear from homeowners across Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, and the rest of the Triangle: How often do windows in our area actually need to be cleaned?

The honest answer is more often than most people think, but less often than you’d have to if you lived somewhere with harsh winters.

Here in Wake County, we don’t deal with heavy snow and ice, but we do deal with pollen. If you’ve lived here through even one spring, you know exactly what we mean. That thick, yellow-green coat that settles on every surface from late February through May isn’t just visually annoying, it works its way into window frames, tracks, and screens, and builds up over time.

When you add our humid summers, insects’ reemergence, red clay dust from all the new construction going up around us, and the general grime that comes with living near busy roads, you’ve got windows that get dirty fast.

Whether you’re in Holly Springs near the newer subdivisions off Avent Ferry, in Fuquay-Varina where the tree canopy keeps things shaded and damp, in Cary or Apex where the rapid growth means construction dust is almost constant, or right in Raleigh — the window-cleaning challenges are real and local. Our team knows the specific conditions in each of these communities, and we tailor our approach accordingly.

For most Triangle homeowners, here’s what we recommend:

  • Exterior windows: Twice a year — once in late spring after pollen season wraps up, and once in the fall before the holidays. This is the minimum for keeping your home looking well-maintained.
  • Interior windows: Once a year is usually enough, though households with kids, pets, or a lot of cooking may want to do twice.
  • If you have a pool, back up to a wooded area, or live near a construction zone, you may even want to bump exterior cleaning up to three times a year. Algae, tree sap, and dust accumulate faster than you’d expect.

Dirty windows aren’t just an eyesore. Over time, hard water deposits, pollen residue, and oxidation can etch into the glass, making it harder and more expensive to restore later. Regular cleaning keeps the glass in better condition longer and makes every cleaning faster and more affordable.

There’s also a simpler reason: your home looks better. Clean windows let in more natural light, improve curb appeal, and make your space feel fresher, inside and out.
